Nintendo Unveils Next-Gen Console, the Nintendo Switch 2
Following months of leaks and growing speculation, Nintendo has officially revealed its next hybrid gaming console, the Nintendo Switch 2. The announcement came Thursday via a video shared across its social media channels, showcasing a sleeker, more advanced version of its groundbreaking predecessor. The console, set for a 2025 release, will run exclusive titles designed for its updated hardware while maintaining compatibility with both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games.
Nintendo has not yet provided detailed specifications, instead focusing on showcasing the hardware’s design in the announcement trailer. The console sticks to the core aesthetic of the original Switch, delivering improvements in key areas without venturing into uncharted territory. The upgrades align closely with what earlier leaks and reports suggested.
A Bigger Screen for Enhanced Gameplay
One of the most anticipated upgrades is the larger display. The original Switch came with a 6.2-inch LCD screen, while the OLED model expanded that to 7 inches. Although Nintendo has not confirmed the screen dimensions, the trailer hints at a size increase to approximately 8 inches, as leaks had predicted.
The console keeps the USB Type-C port at the bottom edge while adding another at the top. Alongside this are the power and volume buttons, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and the game cartridge slot, ensuring familiar functionality for existing users.
Redesigned Kickstand and Portable Features
A significant design change is the upgraded kickstand. The flimsy stand of the original Switch and the plate-style stand from the OLED version have been replaced with a robust rail kickstand that spans the back’s lower edge. This improvement allows for a greater range of angles, even enabling the console to rest almost flat against a surface.
Revamped Joy-Cons
Nintendo has also reimagined the Joy-Con controllers. Slightly larger to suit the bigger screen, they sport a matte black finish with subtle blue and red accents. Departing from the previous rail mechanism, the Joy-Cons now use a magnetic snap-on attachment system, as rumors had indicated. A release trigger on the back makes detachment easier.
Despite these changes, the button layout remains consistent with the original Joy-Cons. Players can still combine them with a grip to create a traditional controller for docked mode.

The dock has also been redesigned, now featuring smoother, more rounded edges and a larger build. Prominent “Nintendo Switch 2” branding adorns the front. In a surprise reveal during the trailer, Nintendo teased a new Mario Kart title, potentially a long-awaited sequel to Mario Kart 8, which debuted in 2014 on the Wii U and was later re-released for the Switch.

The Nintendo Switch 2 follows nearly nine years after the original console was revealed in 2016. Since its release, the Nintendo Switch, along with its OLED and Lite variants, has sold over 146 million units, making it the third best-selling console of all time.
